New Edition Pox Seeding Wonderful Method Detailed Comprehend 

天花之症，原西边诸国本无。前一千一百余年，由东边地方传染，遍行西域诸国。

Disease of Heavenly flower (smallpox), orignianlly, not existed in the countries of west region.  Back to 1100s, infected from the areas of east region, spreads across the countries of west region.

时遇天行，国中无一宁户，虽都甸僻隅，多因惨遭其。或损兄弟，或损儿孙。父子亲眷。悲切难闻。若侥幸命存，或痘癣疾于耳目手足，难以枚举。即王侯士庶，家家户户，无不惊惶，都以生灵为重。

when met it universally spreading (pandemic), there was no single peaceful household, what ever in the field of capital, or the remote corner, many were harmed tragically because of it. (someone)May lost big brothers, little brothers, may lost sons and grandsons, fathers, sons, parents, and dependents, not dare to hear that deeply grieve. If survived by exceptional lucky, the pox marks on ear and ears (area), hands and feet, can’t count it one by one。kings, lords, gentlemen, and commons, family by family, household by household, no one were not frighten and fearful, all considered life and spiritswere most heavy（important）。

及至前百余年，曾有医书种法，尚未尽善尽美，试其用法言之。

When, one hundred years and more ago, used to have a medical book about planting methods, still not very good and not very perfect yet, (I will) try to talk about the method. 

时遇天行时，将好痘者用小刀取其痘浆。刺在未出痘者臂上，俟数日，痘随此出。不能尽善，以至殒命，并损害手足耳目，甚而至服药调治者，亦不知何许。

when met it universally spreading, used the intact pox, used small knife take the juice, punch on the arm of the people have no small pox yet, wait for few days, pox germinated from it. (The method) is not very good, even resulted death, at the same time damaged hands, feet, ears and eyes, people even reach to need drink medicine, don’t know what it is. 

今本国英吉利，有畜牛取乳者甚多，时即嘉庆元年，本国遇值天行，遭经遍户，纷纷传说，惟畜牛取乳者不染天花，

At present, our country England, has many people keeping cow and taking milk, when the first year of jiaqing, our country met it universally spreading, across all the household, scattered transferred a theory, only people people keeping cow and taking milk not be infected by smallpox. 

各闻为异。适有医生名占拿者，国内声名昭著，颇称济世良医，见遭天花之患，不可胜数，常欲明达救济之法，随即往视。

Everyone heard that think (it is) magic. Just have a doctor called Zhan Na(Jenner), Bright and famous inside the country, many stated (He is) a good doctor who help the society, (He) saw many smallpox suffering patient, not able to count the number, always try to understand and achieve the methods to save and help, immediately come to see (milk people). 

果见揸牛乳者，不染天花之症，是以坚意细查。见牛奶及奶头，奶傍之处，有生盐疱，形如痘，细猜牛痘莫非能解散人痘之毒乎？

result see the people who take cow milk with finger, not infected by disease of smallpox, so, use strong will, inspected carefully. Saw milk, milk nipple, beside the breast, germinated salt lump,  the shape similar to pox, (He) think carefully, probably, Can cow pox remove and relieve the poison of human pox? 

随即想法与人试种，或能减𨚫天花之原，亦是美事。于是与人种试，果经所种之人，随种随效。每自初种至第四日，始露形影，即至八九日满浆。至十四日靥脱全愈，后来相传至大西洋，亚细亚，亚美利加。依法栽种，男女大小，数百余万，无一损伤，无一复出。

then, think (developed) a method to trial plant on human, may able to reduce and remove the origin of smallpox, will be a beautiful think. so, (he) trialed plant on human, as expected, people who had been planted, planted and effected. Every time, from beginning planting, until the fourth day, (Pox) started show its shape and shadow, until eighth or ninth day, juice is full, until fourteenth day. Scab fall off and recovered fully. afterwards, (the methods) been spread to country of Atlantic, Asia, America. Use this methods to plant seed, male and female, elder and youth, millions and more, no one lost and hurt, no one re germinated pox

继传至大吕宋，得闻此奇妙，伊国王不惜万金，特发一船，装载婴儿至本国，传种此痘，由船次第往返，依法而行，每种必效，（随后发）

(method) continue to spread to reach great Lv Song  (Luzong island), heared the method is magic like this, their King didn’t regret use ten thousand gold, purposely, send a ship, with full load of infants reached our country, rotated to plant this pox, ships one after another come and back, follow the methods to work,  every planting was working definitely. 

（随后发）谕伊所属国小吕宋，亦遍行栽种，其经种者，果免天花之患。如此奇法，保全生灵无限，实伊国中之大幸也。

Then, send decree to its vassal state Minor Lv Song, also planted seed thought out, its people who had been planted, as expected avoided the suffer of smallpox. This methods magical like that, protect and preserve life and spirit uncountable, It is their country’s great fortunate indeed. 

兹于嘉庆十年四月内，由啤道路滑船自小吕宋，装载婴儿，传此痘种到澳。本国医生协同澳门医生照法栽种。华夷童稚，不下数百，俱亦保全无恙。

At tenth year of Jia Qing, in the April, by ‘Pi Dao Lu Hua’’s ship from minor Lv Song, carrying infant, handed this pox seeds to Macao. our country’s Doctor corporate with Macao’s doctor, followed the methods, planted the seeds, Chinese and foreign Children, no less than few hundreds, all, again, protected in full, no disease.  

今予等见天花之症，荼毒不浅。谨将目击屡效之法，先于医生详订，翻译，辑成一书，传行于世，诸名医者，不可不留心此法也。

At present, we see the disease of the small pox,  bitter poisoning deeply. (we) carefully bring what (our) eyes saw, and always efficient methods, firstly let the doctor conclude in detail,  translate, gathering to a book, deliver across the country, every famous doctors, should not to pay attention this method. 

此牛痘种与天花痘种不同，天花之症，能传染于人，而牛痘之症，非种不行。 天花之症，定必发寒发热，大小便结闭不通，或昏迷不醒，喉干舌燥，唇焦乱语不等，虽用针熏药法，亦不能保其无虞。

this cow pox seed and small pox seed is different, the disease of smallpox, can spread and infect human, however the disease of cow pox, without seed, won’t happen. Disease of smallpox, definitely and must occurring cold occurring fever, urine and excrement restrained and closed, not through, or in coma can’t weak up, throat is dry, tongue is dry, lips is dry, and confusing language, etc, even use acupuncture, fumigate, medicine methods, also not able to protect people from worrying. 

但其牛痘种在于所种之处，只出一颗，如小指头大，至寒热各症不能相染，（内中）

However, cow pox seed, at the place where seed are planted, only germinated one, size like the little finger, extreme code and fever disease not able to infect. 

（内中） 或有些微寒微热，虽服药不服药与病无干碍。想此灵妙之法，相传于数十年之后，永不防有染天花之患矣。

during this period, probably (patient) has mild cold mild fever, even if use medicine or not use medicine, have no connect, or hinder with disease. think about the effective and wonderful method, spread to each other after decades, (will) never, need no protection 

此法始凴牛出之种，种于人，后将人出之痘浆，刻轮传种于万万人。其种法不论春秋冬夏，遇时皆合，不分男女大小，以其年纪幼少者为佳。

from infection smallpox disease. This methods defends on seed from cow at beginning, plant on human, later, use human’s pox juice, punch, rotate spread the seed to ten thousand and thousand of people, this seeding methods doesn’t need to select spring, autumn, winter and summer, meet the period, all suitable, no need to divided to male, female, adult or children, for patient age of infant or young, is better.  

初将外科小刀，向相近肩膞臂上，不拘左右，平刺皮膜。或用铁针如锥嘴大，务要最萡利者方合用，

At beginning, use surgical knife, towards limb arm next to shoulder, no limited to left or right, flat punch into skin membrane. Or use iron needle, like awl’s mouth size,  must, most important, use most thin and most sharp one, can suitable for use. 

切不可直企刺入，若刀入肉里，血出太多，将所种之痘浆攻出，恐不成功。务宜平刺皮膜，无血为妙，或血出些少，亦无碍。

Be very careful, no directly vertical punch into, if the knife (punch) into muscle, blood (be) produced too much, will bring the seeded pox juice out, (I’m) afraid it (will) not success.  Must, and best to flat punch though skin membrane, no blood out is the best, or, blood out little bit, no hinder as well. 

如果种下四日，其形发红，至六日，起一小疱，八日，其疱畧大些，顶平不尖，中央一点硬的，周围涨如清水，根脚如有红线围缠，觉有些疼，至九日，浆已满足. 若取痘浆种于别人，（务以第）

If seeded for four days, the shape starts red. Reach the sixth day, start a small blister. Eighth day, the blister (grow) little bit bigger, top is flat not sharp, centre part, little hard, around it, full of (thing) like clear water,  root and foot (of blister) (looks) like have a red wire surround, feel little bit aches.  Reach ninth day, juice full and enough. If use pox juice to seed other people, 

（务以第）九日为度，恐后其浆脓渐干，如是第十四日或至第十八日，靥焦脱退，其人永无出痘矣。

must use ninth day’s as limit, (I’m) afraid the later its juice dry gradually. like this, fourteenth day or until eighteenth day, Scab dry and fall off. This person will never have pox. 

如取种之法，以鲜痘浆即时传种更妙。可将铁小针，向其痘相近边傍处刺三四小孔，俟有些浆水流出，粘在小刀尖上，即可种于别人。

Like the method to take seed, use fresh pox juice immediately seeding is most wonderful. can use iron needle, point to the area very close to side of pox, punch three, or four small holes, wait some little bit juice come out, stick to the small knife’s point, immediately can use to see on others. 

若离隔远涉，难取鲜浆，可以将象牙小簪，粘此些痘浆，俟干了，藏于鹅毛筒内，用蜜蜡封固，可能留至两个月之内，如过期断断不能用矣。务宜于两月之内，早种为佳。

if (need) leave and travel to isolated place, across far waters, hard to take fresh juice, can use ivory small hair pin, stick this little bit pox juice, wait to dry, hide inside goose feather cylinder, use bee wax seal tight, possible leave (it alive) within two months, if pass the date, must, must, not use it. Must, better use within two months, earlier seeding is preferred. 

临种之时，于毛筒内取出象牙小簪，用暖水熏润，先将铁扁针刺破皮膜，然后将牙小簪上之痘种，插入刺破皮膜处少顷，拔出，如有微血，勿被衣衫拭去。此种法或出一颗称为伪痘，其痘顶圆而且软，中无一点硬的，浆水白色如脓，根脚不甚鲜红，是为伪也。

immediately before seeding time, from inside of feather cylinder, take ivory small hairpin, use warm water steam it make it moist. First, use from flat needle punch through skin membrane, then use ivory small hair pin with pox seed, punch into broken skin membrane for a while, pull out, if has little bit blood, don't be wiped by clothing and robe. But this method may produce a different one called fake pox, this pox has round top and soft, centre but is not hard at all, juice water is white like pus, foot and root area is very red, is fake thing. 

（其豆虽伪）实无患险，不过遇到时行而复出矣。若真是，其痘顶平，中央一点硬的，跟脚鲜红如红线围缠，痘脚之外，觉有红影，痘桨如清水，不转白色如脓者便真，须于此用意分别。 如遇伪痘，再取种种于别处，无不效验者也。

Although this pox is fake, but no need to fear about danger indeed, in worse scenario, meet the pandemic, pox will re garmerite. If (pox) is real, the pox has flat top; centre bit has little bit hard, root and foot freshly red like surround by red wire, out the foot of pox, feel like has red shadow, pox juice like clear water, will not turn to pus, is real pox, must use this (standard) carefully distinguish. If meet the fake pox, take the seed and seed to other place, no effective. 

凡戒口不食猪肉，鸡鸭，咸物及酒者，更佳。宜食粥饭鲜鱼及瓜菜等物也可。

All mouth against, no eat pig meat, chicken, duck, salt processed thing, are better. Better to eat rice porridge, fresh fish, melon, and vegetables, is okay.

种下至第九日形，模如此便是真痘

此象牙小簪长寸许，两头宜尖萡利

 this is ivory small hair pin, more than one Cun long, two end better to be sharp pointed, thin and sharp. 

此外科手术小刀，宜尖萡利，约长寸许，外有玳瑁刀壳，两边夹住，临用拨开。
